In 1935, Martin F. O'Donoghue founded O'Donoghue & O'Donoghue as a union-side labor law firm. Later joined by his son, Patrick O'Donoghue, and a team of skilled attorneys, Martin O'Donoghue set a standard for representation that enabled the Firm to grow both in size and prestige. Driven by the desire to advocate on behalf of the labor movement, O'Donoghue attorneys expanded the practice to serve all of the needs of its labor organization clients. Today, O'Donoghue & O'Donoghue LLP is one of the oldest and largest union-side labor law firms in the United States, with approximately thirty attorneys engaged in a nationwide practice as well as an active local practice in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Since its founding, which coincided with the passage of the National Labor Relations Act, O'Donoghue & O'Donoghue LLP has served as counsel for both international and local unions. The Firm serves as general counsel for three international unions representing employees who work in the plumbing and pipefitting, elevator and escalator, and plastering and cement masonry trades. The Firm also serves as general counsel for a trade department of the AFL-CIO. In addition, the Firm serves as counsel on a regular basis or for special projects for unions representing asbestos workers, broadcast technicians, communications workers, electrical workers, emergency medical technicians, federal government employees, ironworkers, judges, letter carriers, machinists, pilots, pressmen, stagehands, teachers, teamsters and others.

During the 1950s, O'Donoghue & O'Donoghue LLP helped to establish some of the first jointly administered employee benefit plans in the construction and printing industries. Over the years, the Firm has grown its employee benefit practice to include the representation of both national and local employee benefit plans, including defined benefit and defined contribution pension, medical, vacation, apprentice and other welfare plans in a wide range of industries. The Firm represents plans of all sizes, from those with fewer than 100 participants to plans with more than 100,000 participants. O'Donoghue attorneys provide a wide range of legal services to these plans, including litigation, plan drafting, and day-to-day administrative needs.

In recent years, O'Donoghue & O'Donoghue LLP has been at the forefront of developing legislation, both at the federal and state level, to improve how the government works for both labor organizations and employee benefit plans. O'Donoghue attorneys have spearheaded initiatives such as Best Value Contracting, as well as the development of state licensing codes for various building and construction trades.
